Hi, my name is Fi and I’m the florist at Corky and Prince. Together with my husband Alan (artist, craftsman and general fixer), we aim to deliver exquisite flowers and visual styling for your wedding or event. This is our story.
My love affair with flowers and floral art began at a very early age with a “Garden in a biscuit-tin lid” competition for the local village show – I can’t remember whether I won a prize or not, but it was the creative process and the endless possibilities of working with natural materials that had me hooked. Growing up on a farm in Cornwall, I was lucky to be surrounded by fields and woods, hedgerows and gardens so the natural world has always played a big role in my life. My Mum is a keen gardener and my childhood memories of Christmases include her floral centrepieces created from branches of greenery, cones and fresh flowers.
It was inevitable, then, that I would develop a passion for flowers and bringing my creative streak into play would lead me to floral design – just for fun. But it was my hobby, and I’ve spent the last 27 years in the world of banking. Despite a busy working life, I continued to develop my floral art skills with regular design competitions and church flower arranging. Over the years, I’ve been asked to do the wedding venue flowers for family and friends and so turning my passion into a business felt like the right thing to do.
I spent time training with the enthusiastic and renowned tutors at the Academy of Flowers in Covent Garden, one of the top training schools in the UK. The course was fantastic and really super-charged my passion for all things floral – I have not stopped practising and experimenting since I came home and I continue to invest in learning the latest skills. My floral design style reflects my love of gardening and nature – I like to use beautiful foliage, seed heads, scented herbs and succulents as well as unusual flowers to create displays that reflect the seasons.
My partner in life and business is my wonderful husband Al. Something of a Renaissance Man, he has many passions including but not limited to cycling, guitars and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC! Alan trained as an Art Teacher years ago but left the profession to try his hand in the corporate world. In more recent years, he has rekindled a passion for creative writing as well as learning how to build guitars. His patience and endless support are essential to the smooth running of Corky and Prince.
